New York City isn’t just a destination — it’s a legend. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. An international icon where culture, architecture, and energy collide in an endless symphony of sights, sounds, and photographic opportunities. This workshop will take you beyond the picture postcard and into the heart of the city, where you will explore creative photography techniques to transform ordinary shots into unique images that capture the essence of NYC. What makes photographing New York so addictive is its constant reinvention. In one day you can capture sleek modernism, historic grit, natural beauty, and cultural vibrancy — all under that unmistakable New York energy. Whether you’re hooked on multiple exposure, want to experiment with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), or prefer to deconstruct NYC using minimalism, this workshop is designed to help you capture New York’s essence in novel and distinctive ways.
" The workshop was well paced and full of adventure. Both Deb and Jonathan provided a well curated exploration of seeing through our camera lens in new and unique ways." ~ Nadine L

~ Bea D.
The workshop will begin at approximately 3:00PM for a "meet & greet" at our hotel after which we will head out for our first photo walk followed by the opening dinner. We conclude after breakfast on the last day.
Each day we will visit different locations uptown, downtown and all around the town. Our itinerary will remain flexible to take advantage of the light, weather and unexpected opportunities, but our creative journey will include places like the Oculus at the World Trade Center. Its soaring white ribbed structure is a study in modern elegance, offering sweeping interior lines that frame natural light and bustling human movement. We will also take a step back in time at the abandoned hospital on Ellis Island — haunting, beautiful, and steeped in ghosts of immigrants. Weathered walls and shafts of filtered light make it a treasure trove for moody, atmospheric shots. Uptown, the Guggenheim Museum beckons with its iconic spiral ramp and bold curves, a chance to play with symmetry, shadow, and abstract form. A short walk away, Central Park is hopefully at its October best, draped in reds, golds, and oranges that provide the backdrop for the park’s bridges, ponds, and meadows juxtaposed against the urban skyline.
Other potential locations include SUMMIT One Vanderbilt — a dizzying blend of glass, steel, and sky — where mirrored interiors and sweeping city views position us to capture New York from above. On the west side, The High Line offers an elevated garden path through art installations, architecture, and ever-changing city perspectives. Meanwhile, Chinatown bursts with color and texture, intricate shop signs and tightly packed streets.
For a change of pace and scale, we find the Storm King Art Center north of the city in the Hudson Valley. Here massive sculptures rise from rolling hills bathed in fall color and light.
Each of our locations is chosen to allow our participants to practice different techniques, pursue their individual photographic styles, hone their skills and increase their creativity quotient.
Over the course of the workshop, participants also have the opportunity to meet individually with Jonathan and Deb for a one-on-one session to review images, ask questions, talk photography or fine tune photoshop skills. The agenda for the hour is up to you.
Finally, four to six weeks after the workshop, there will be a Zoom meeting to share images from our time in and around London, ask still unanswered questions and share images.

Based in Stamford, Connecticut, Deborah Loeb Bohren is a travel-inspired fine art and editorial photographer focusing on the creation of intimate and grand portraits of natural and man-made environments around the globe. She won her first photography contest at P.S. 27 in Yonkers, NY when she was in the 6th grade and doesn’t remember when photography wasn’t a part of her life. She uses her camera as an artist would use a paintbrush and think of her work as visual alchemy: a transformation not of matter into gold but rather of light, color, line and gesture into images. Techniques such as intentional camera movement (ICM), in-camera multiple exposure, minimalism and abstraction are the primary tools of her alchemy. These techniques work allow her to challenge reality and capture a feeling, emotion or impression rather than simply recording what lies in front of the lens. Her images are part of individual, private and corporate collections across the country and have been in gallery and museum exhibitions. She serves as a judge and guest presenter at camera clubs across the country, and teaches a range of photography courses. She is also a regular contributor to Everett Potter’s Travel Report, sharing her global travels through words and images.

British Photographer Jonathan Vaines bought his first camera in 2011, joined his local camera club the following year and quickly began winning local and national photography competitions. In 2018 he began exploring in-camera multiple exposure and intentional camera movement and from his earliest experimentation with these techniques, a new style would emerge and lead to a whole new way for him of seeing — and capturing — what lies in front of his lens. He has spent the last six years pursuing novel and innovative ways of wielding his camera and moulding ideas to produce unique, one-of-a-kind images of the world around him. He frequently works in sets of up to 25 related images and believes the seeing eye of art is an ever-evolving journey and he advocates for visualization, the understanding of light and appreciation ofcolor to produce meaningful art. His unique approach and work have made him a sought after photographer in the UK and internationally. He is a member of the prestigious London Salon of Photography, teaches workshops for Royal Photographic Society, is a frequent presenter for international photography organizations and camera clubs, offers one-to-one development programs for photographers seeking to advance their own technical and creative skills and he runs one-day photography workshops in London. His work also appears in photo magazines.
